Steal the Magnolias

Magnolias are right up there with the most gorgeous flowers. At least I think so. Magnolia trees are deciduous so they loose their copious leaves in autumn, and produce flowers on their otherwise bare branches in mid-late Winter. At least they are supposed to! At flowering, they are a sight to be seen.

I have two Magnolia trees in my front yard. One produces pale pink flowers, and the other port wine. At least they did.

For the first five Winters that I occupied this house, both trees flowered beautifully. I bought my house in late June, during the time of year when the tree branches are bare. Back then I knew very little about trees, plants and gardening and didn't even know what those two trees were!  I remember my surprise, and delight, when they flowered a few weeks after I moved in. The Magnolias truly made my front yard look so beautiful in the bleakness of Winter! And the colour only lasts a few short weeks.

With flowers like this

And like this

Both of the photos above were taken in August 2010. My Magnolia trees haven't flowered since, and I feel ripped off! I'm sure the possums do too (the possums eat the flowers... and poop all over my yard!).

Last year, I waited... and waited... and waited to see my trees flower. They didn't. This year is looking like a repeat of last. Sadly, so far, both trees are showing no signs of flowers. No buds. Nothing.  I'm not happy! The trees still dropped all their leaves, leaving them (excuse the pun) for me to pick up. I did the time... now I should reap the reward, being the enjoyment of the gorgeous flowers. It's only fair. At least I think so.

So I'm waiting... waiting... waiting... for my very bare Magnolia trees to flower. I'm sure the possums are waiting too!

So far all I've got this year is this!
On the upside, at least I haven't had to clean up possum poo!

Do you have Magnolia trees? Do they always flower?

  1. I have a magnificent one at my front door, at least I did when I moved in last year. You've made me look at it and it too is bare with show of buds!! Last year it was so overloaded with flowers that it actually was worse cleaning te flower petals up than the leaves!!

I need it to bloom. I can't wait to see if others have any insight.

  2. Oh dear, that is quite upsetting. I just posted last week about the stunning Magnolia tree in my parent's yard, it is nothing short of breathtaking. Though I have heard of Magnolia's that just stop flowering. Wish I knew why so I could give you some advice. Fingers crossed it's just holding out on the blooms and they'll eventually burst forth xo

  3. I love Magnolia tress - they're one of my favourite too. Do you prune it and feed it at the end of Autumn? Maybe it needs some lovin'?

    1. I've pruned it once... other than that I've pretty much left it alone. I think you might be onto something! ;-)

  4. The one saving grace of my house (which needs an overhaul) is the magnolia tree out the front. It's blooming now but I think the cold snap will shorten the flowering this year. My problem is cockatoos - they strip it in a matter of days.

  5. I grew up with a magnolia tree - it eventually died and mum didn't replace it. I've noticed them coming up around the area now. I hope your tree flowers soon. If not ... may be plant new ones next to the others?

  9. I haven't ever seen real magnolias, would you beleive. We don't have four season in Darwin, so I guess they just don't grow up here.
    Have you googled it?

  10. I used to have Magnolia trees at my old house, and they bloomed every year. I was always amazed at how quickly it seemed the flowers came and went though. I've enjoyed wandering around the neighbourhood spying magnolia trees in bloom here in Melbourne, they really are such a beautiful sight. Hope yours are bountiful soon! x

  11. Beautiful trees, such a shame that they haven't put on a show for you (or the possoms) for so long. I hope they flower for you soon.

Funny, my husband was just commenting yesterday how wonderful it would be to plant a magnolia tree in our backyard. I couldn't agree more...
