Not so Magic Mike

On Saturday evening a girlfriend and I went to the movies to see Magic Mike. It's the kind of movie that is perfectly suited to a girl's night out, or day out. Apparently.

Not a single male was seated in the cinema for that session. Which of course is really no surprise, given the subject matter.

In case you haven't seen, heard or read about Magic Mike, it's a movie about male strippers.

The easy on the eyes Channing Tatum plays the role of Mike, a man of many talents. An aspiring furniture-maker, he operates several small businesses by day, and err...  'dances' in a male strip show revue  by night, with the noble goal of saving cash to start his custom-design furniture business.

Mike takes Adam 'The Kid' under his wing and teaches him how to dance, party and pick up chicks. The Kid soon becomes a popular attraction at Club Xquisite, owned by the flamboyant front man Dallas (Matthew McConaughey).

Deep, huh?

But all is not lost!  Not quite. Mike begins to show some tiny morsels of depth of character, probably brought on by his attraction to Adam's studious older sister Brooke (Cody Horn)... And then the credits roll. The End.

Ok, so Magic Mike is a movie that is low on substance, but high on... umm... scenery? Or something like that.

An in the flesh (excuse the pun) male strip show is not my scene. Not really. Not at all. And I cringed at some of the antics of the 'dancers' in the movie, although many more of their 'moves' made me laugh. Out loud.

If you're looking for a fun movie to see with your besties, one that doesn't require much any thinking... then this is it.  If you go in with low expectations, you won't be disappointed.

I give it a 3 out of 10, plus a bonus point for Channing Tatum's six-pack. Check it out below  (the movie trailer, not the six-pack!)

  1. Hahahaha I have to say your review is spot on. I confess, I thoroughly enjoyed the film - bit of escapism, six pacs and Channing Tatum? Fine by me.

  2. Oh dear, I gave my 14 year old daughter permission to see this with her aunt last week, based on a review which said it was really great and not about the beefcake, but about someone trying to make something of their life and that it was really touching and meaningful! I was duped! Not even my teenage daughter enjoyed it.

  3. Dome friends were very excited about this movie. One went with her Mum and the others haven't be organized enough to go. I'm glad that I wa neve really interested in seeing it. I have an issue with objectification of women. I think I was a hypocrite if I didn't think objectification of men was just as bad.
