How many adults does it take to assemble a bedside table?

Scattered puzzle pieces next to solved fragment

Last night Ben arrived home with a bedside table, of the 'ready to assemble' kind. My immediate thought was, "Here we go!... Tonight's entertainment."

My son is a sporty, muso, xbox-playing kind of a guy. He's not exactly a handyman, Mr Fix-it kind of a bloke.  That's usually my role. He doesn't even know where we I keep the tools, like screwdrivers and hammers and stuff.

Ben opens the flatpack, pulls out all the bits, glances over the one-page instructions and says, "Where's the English?" Umm...  this is the part where I point out to him that he purchased his new bedside from a cheap discount store. No, he didn't go to Ikea . I think the instructions were in Spanish.

So he was forced to rely on the diagrams, which weren't very helpful. At all.

Piece 1 looks almost exactly like piece 2, and pieces 3 - 5 are identical but in an upside down back to front sort of a way.  And then how does the door fit on?

Fortunately the {other} man in my life was there to lend a hand, and a cordless drill! So there we were, the three of us trying to work out which way was up, and which bits go where. A team-building exercise, of sorts.

I'm pleased to say we assembled that bedside table, without a Spanish interpreter and with no left over bits. And it hardly even wobbles.

  1. LMAO at "And it hardly even wobbles." Well done! I would be lost without my husband for 3 reasons. He is so very handy. He's not afraid of heights. And he's a computer whizzgeek. Ok, maybe a few more reasons, but they're the main ones!

  4. I quite enjoy putting together flat pack furniture - a bit like jigsaw puzzles for adults. But a family activity? Risky!

  5. LOL! That's too funny! My hubby's a disaster with DIY projects. There's a huge gash in our wall, behind the TV to prove it :)

  7. That's so funny. It's the sort of thing that would happen to us. Problem is, hubby can't even figure out the Ikea ones. Shh don't tell him I told you that. It would have taken a week for us!

  11. LOL - when K was a baby my folks arrived at our house with a flat pack high chair. The picture on the outside had a lady in high heels and the completed chair. Well, A and my Dad started - I don't know how many hours later, the chair was eventually finished and we had all nearly wet ourselves laughing so much !!!! Every time they couldn't get something to fit, one of us would say "But the lady in high heels got it done - how come you two can't".
We still laugh about this sometimes when we get together - it has provided more hours of entertainment than anyone would ever have imagined !!!
HAve a great rest of the week !

  12. Well done the three of you! It took my hubby 3 hours and an unbelievable amount of expletives to put one bedside table together AND the instructions were in English AND he was once a carpenter many, many years ago.
