Dinner and Chinese Checkers

Chinese Checker Board

Last night I was invited by friends to their house for dinner. I rarely decline a dinner (or lunch) invitation from this couple. Not only are they both trained chefs who can even make an exeptional meal out of sausages, they are great company. Incidently, I haven't invited them to dinner at my house but when I do, they will have to do the cooking!

Dinner was a French risotto with chicken and fennell, and brocolli on the side. Just something my friend whipped up while we stood in her kitchen chatting. I brought the wine. Like always, the food was fantastic. The wine was good too.

After dinner the man of the house brought out the Chinese Checkerboard. I hadn't played this game in years, so required a quick recap on the rules. In fact, it had been a long time since I'd sat after dinner and played a board game.  So long that I can't even remember the last time that happened.

No TV, no computers or techie gadgets. Just three adults and one child playing a competitive friendly game of Chinese Checkers.  It was good old fashioned fun.

Not surprisingly, I came second last... but at least I beat the kid!   Although I think we need a re-match, as that one was just practice.

When was the last time you played an 'old fashioned' board game?

Linking up with Grace and the gang for FYBF! Pop on over to see who else is playing.

  2. The boys are just at the age now where they are really starting to enjoy games, so we play them quite often now! Snakes and Ladders, and a game called 'Zingo' are the favourites at the moment.
I haven't played Chinese Checkers for years! I'd forgotten it even existed! :)

  6. Oh, I love Chinese Checkers!
I can't wait till the twinlets are old enough to play Uno and Monopoly.
Hopefully they won't be as competitive as their mother....ahems...

  7. That is a great dinner party in my world! We play a bit of poker or 500 occasionally, but a board game.. that doesn't involve Dora or the Very Hungry Caterpillar... it's been years. And I love them. Big, complicated jigsaw puzzles is the other thing I want to re-introduce to this family. We just need a big table and lots of spare time.

    1. Ah, just remember the workout we've given Trivial Pursuit over the years. Now that's a great game.

  8. I'm trying to find a set of old fashioned jacks (or knuckles) to play with my daughter; I haven't had much luck yet. Aside from absolutely loving it as a child, it's trained me to have incredibly quick reflexes. I only realised recently when I cuaght a cup mid flight and wondered why I could do this frequently. I'd saved a lamb knuckle for the game (which i've since ditched) and it gave me the epiphany.
